At Chief Minister’s Office
Earlier in the Day, at a function held in the Chief Minister’s office, the Minister for Health, Smt. P. K. Sreemathi wore the red ribbon – the universal symbol for HIV/AIDS on the Chief Minister, Sri. V. S. Achuthanandan. The chief minister in a statement released on the occasion called for the public to wear red ribbon to express solidarity with HIV positives. After that, Sri. Manoj Joshi IAS, Health Secretary fastened red ribbon on Smt. Neela Gangadharan, Chief Secretary at her office. Media persons also wore red ribbons.
Public Meeting at Senate Hall
Kerala State AIDS Control Society is delivering an admirable work to reduce stigma and discrimination against HIV in the society, said Minister for Health, Smt. P. K. Sreemathi. The minister was delivering the inaugural speech of the World AIDS Day observance at the Senate Hall in Thiruvananthapuram. “Though KSACS’ intervention among the grassroots level helped to reduce the stigma to a large extent, it still needs to reach more people. Interventions among the high-risk groups should also be increased, so that the spread of the epidemic can be brought down considerably,” the minister said. She also said that an ART centre would start functioning soon in Kasaragod.
The inaugural function was presided over by Sri. V. Surendran Pillai MLA. A handbook on HIV prevention training for Anganwadi workers was released by the Minister for Health Smt. P. K. Sreemathi by handing over a copy of the same to Dr. Usha Titus IAS., Secretary, and Social Welfare Department. A report presentation was done by Dr. K. Shylaja, Project Director, KSACS. Smt. Girija Pavithran, Vice President, CPK+ was also present during the occasion. Magician Gopinath Muthukad performed a show carrying the message of World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day Observance Week
As part of the observance of the Day, KSACS organized an intensive campaign for the promotion of voluntary blood donation in the state. On the Day, Blood Safety Division conducted 28 Voluntary Blood Donation camps in the state. The Day’s observance was converted into World AIDS Day Observance Week by conducting 54 camps during the week. All the programs were conducted in association with DMO offices, District Voluntary Blood Donation forums, District Program Managers and the respective blood banks.
World AIDS Day Observance by Service Centers
The service centers of KSACS organized extensive programs on the Day. Prathysa centers set KIOSK at hospitals, railway stations and at bus stations and distributed various IEC materials and red ribbons to public. Positive speaking also carried out. In Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, Malappuram and Kasaragod, Prathyasa Centers organized a rally in association with District Medical Offices, some colleges and NGOs.
Jyothis Centres organized a slogan competition-promoting HIV testing- for the staff. The key message of the slogan was “Jyothis Centres for Counseling and HIV testing”. A KIOSK of Jyothis Centres displayed in front of the out patient department of hospitals where the Centers were functioning.
Pulari centres conducted awareness class stressing on the necessity to treat Sexually Transmitting Infections at the earliest, the link between STI and HIV etc.
ART units in the state organized a panel discussion on the topic-Universal Access and Human Rights, and a quiz program. Pledge taking and red ribbon wearing were also organized on the Day.
Programs Organized by Various Government Departments and Public Sector Undertakings in association with KSACS
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the office in which the Head of the Department inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon. All staff of the Department at State, District, Block level and the Social Welfare institutions wore red ribbon.
Poster Display – The posters related to HIV/AIDS were displayed at all major offices under Social Welfare Department, up to Block level.
Orientation program for ICDS supervisors – A one hour session on HIV/AIDS was conducted at the Block level sector meeting of the ICDS supervisors in December, with the support of Block Medical Officer.
Orientation program in Mother’s meeting – Anganwadi workers invited JPHN/JHI to facilitate a session on HIV/AIDS in the mothers meeting held during the month of December.
Programs at Social Welfare Institutions – Various programs such as awareness classes, wearing of red ribbon, pledge, poster display were conducted at all Social Welfare Institutions
Public Sector Undertakings
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the office in which the Head of the Department inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon. Staff of the PSU also wore red ribbon.
Exhibition – Posters and other IEC materials were displayed at the Notice Board, Canteen, Recreation Club and other places where employees assemble. Banners also displayed in the premises of the institution.
Sensitization program for Staff – with the support of Prathyasha Centers/Jyothis Centers/Local PHCs, the PSUs conducted sensitization program for staff.
Police Department
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the Police Headquarters in which the Director General of Police inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon.
Programs at AR Camp – Programs such as red ribbon wearing, awareness classes, display of materials etc. were also organized at the AR Camps.
Kudumbashree
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the Head office in which the Executive Director inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon. Staff of the institution was also motivated to wear red ribbon.
Labour Department
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the office in which the Head of the Department inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon. Staff of the Department at State, District and Taluk level also wore red ribbon.
Awareness program for workers –An awareness program was conducted for the migrant laborers, construction workers and workers of the traditional industries such as cashew, coir, tiles..
Programs at Plantations – Programs like wearing of red ribbon, awareness classes for employees and display of posters were conducted at plantation level.
Prison Department
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function organized at the office in which the Head of the Department inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon.
Programs at Prisons – Various programs such as awareness classes, wearing of red ribbon, pledge and poster display were conducted at all Prisons.
Tourism Department
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the office in which the Head of the Department inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon. Staff of the Department at State and District level also wore red ribbon.
Programmes in Educational Institutes under Tourism Department - Programmes such as wearing Red Ribbon, HIV/AIDS related awareness classes and poster display were conducted at the educational institutions under Tourism Department.
Motor Vehicle Department
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the office in which the Head of the Department inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon.
Kerala State Road Transport Corporation
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the office in which the Head of the Department inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon. Staff of the Department at various levels also wore red ribbon.
Poster Display – The posters related to HIV/AIDS were displayed at all major offices and bus stations
Kerala Institute for Local Self Administration
Red Ribbon Wearing Ceremony- An official function was organized at the office in which the Head of the Institution inaugurated the wearing of red ribbon. Staff of the Institution also wore red ribbon.
